YACHT MOORING

NASPA YACHT MOORINGS PROJECT BEARING FRUIT

Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA) installed 100 yacht moorings along the western or Caribbean coast of Nevis from Oualie Beach to Charlestown to provide safe anchorage for mariners visiting the island.  NASPA also installed 50 swim buoys along Pinneys Beach from the Four Seasons Resort to Pinneys Beach Hotel in order to create a safe swimming area.

Mooring installations took into consideration the marine environment by using environmentally friendly screw type embedment anchors thus avoiding any negative impacts to the seabed.

Boats can now moor safely for long or short term usage.  The moorings can accommodate vessels in three classes:

  • Up to 35 feet in length or 50 tons.
  • 36 to 60 feet or 50 tons
  • 61 to 90 feet or 80 tons

A safe area has been designated where vessels over 90 feet can drop anchor.

Yacht calls to the island have increased considerably since the installation of the moorings.  Calls for January to May 2007 (5 months) was 214; compared to 503 for January to May 2008 (5 months).  General Manager Spencer Hanley states, that “the current trend clearly indicates that this initiative by NASPA is contributing to the development of tourism in Nevis in general and yacht tourism in particular”.  Mr. Hanley will be attending the Stanford Antigua Sailing Week 2008 from April 27 to May 3 in his continuing efforts to promote yacht tourism in Nevis.

CHARLESTOWN

  • Averages 700 yacht calls per year
  • Over 8,000 Cruise passengers per year
  • Over 320,000 Ferry passengers per year
